For finding accommodation in Basel I was directed to the university's personal ad's website and found a steal of an apartment. There might be something similar for Geneva's university.

Otherwise try and join some expat groups on Facebook and get asking. Also ask your contact where you're studying/working.

What's better to do first - accommodation or bank account?

Ideally, you'd get on with arranging both as soon as possible but you might need to use your UK cash card to get money from a bank machine for a deposit or take cash with you from the UK. Obviously using the card is safer!
